Performance reviews built from the year you actually had.

Cairn keeps 1:1s, bi-weekly updates, goals and feedback in one place, so when review season comes the evidence is already there.

New workspaces start with a 30-day trial for up to 25 people.

A cairn of five stones, one for each piece of someone's year: a 1:1 with Maya on March 4, an update about shipping the new checkout, a goal met for AWS certification, praise from Sam on June 18, and on top, their annual review, shared. 1:1 with Maya, March 4 Update: shipped the new checkout Goal met: AWS certification Praise from Sam, June 18 Annual review shared

How a review year works

Most of a review gets written in small pieces, long before anyone opens a review form.

  1. Quarterly 1:1s

    Every quarter

Manager and report meet with a shared agenda, so both come with something to talk about.

  2. Updates

    Every two weeks

A few short answers about the last fortnight, and how it felt.

  3. Goals with check-ins

    Through the year

Progress and status are recorded as they happen, not reconstructed in December.

  4. The annual review

    Once a year

A self review, peer reviews and a manager review, with the year's record already in Cairn.

  5. Shared and acknowledged

    When it's ready

The person reads their review, acknowledges it and can add a comment. Done.

Everything that goes into a review

Each part works on its own. Together, they're the record a review is written from.

1:1s that pick up where the last one stopped

Both of you add to a shared agenda before you meet. Action items get an owner, and talking points you didn't reach carry into the next meeting.

Private notes are readable only by the person who wrote them.

Updates every two weeks

People answer up to five questions their manager chooses, plus how the fortnight felt. Managers read each one and reply.

Goals with regular check-ins

Each check-in records progress and a status: on track, at risk or off track. Every goal is visible to just you, you and your manager, or everyone.

Performance reviews, from template to acknowledgement

Run annual, quarterly or 90-day cycles from templates. Everyone gets a self review, peer reviews and a manager review, and managers pick 5 to 9 peers for each person.

  • Questions can be 1–5 ratings, KPI met or not met, or written answers, and each review ends with a score.
  • Managers can recommend a raise, level up, promotion, bonus or improvement plan. Exceptions are sent for approval.
  • Reviews are shared with the person, who acknowledges them and can add a comment.

Praise in public, feedback in private

Thank someone on a praise wall the whole team can see.

Private feedback is seen only by the person it's for, and optionally by their manager.

Improvement plans in one place

When someone needs an improvement plan, its goals, approval, weekly check-ins and outcome are kept together, not spread across documents and inboxes.

Privacy you can check

Performance records are some of the most sensitive things a company keeps. Here's how Cairn handles them, and exactly who can read what.

No passwords

Sign in with a link or a six-digit code sent to your work email. There are no passwords to steal or reuse.

Encrypted before it's stored

Reviews, 1:1 notes, updates, feedback and plans are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they're stored, on top of Cloudflare's encryption at rest.

Anonymous stays anonymous

Nobody can see who wrote anonymous peer feedback, managers and admins included. It only appears once enough peers have answered that it can't be traced.

Admins run the process, not the conversations

Admins manage cycles, templates and people, but can't read anyone's 1:1s or updates. Private 1:1 notes are visible only to the person who wrote them.

An audit log

Sensitive actions are recorded in an audit log.

Cloudflare, and nothing else

Cairn runs entirely on Cloudflare: Workers, D1 and Email Service. No trackers, no analytics, no third-party fonts or scripts, on this page or in the app.
